Project DescriptionThe Centre for Trust, Peace & Social Relations of Coventry University is a major UK research centre addressing themes of conflict, peace, migration and security, both on land and at sea. We have a solid track record of projects with the European Commission and other funders dealing with aspects of security and conflict that relate to culture, local ownership, civil society, gender and maritime issues. Our work adopts a global perspective to the challenges posed by conflict but emphasises local priorities and efforts to achieve peace. Our approach highlights the inseparable land-sea nexus and the interconnectedness between human insecurity ashore and at sea. We focus on dimensions of conflict and peacebuilding that complement ‘hard security’, such as military capabilities or land and maritime border controls. We also promote new approaches to community relations, diversity and multiculturalism through our experience in inter-cultural dialogue, gender mainstreaming and building partner knowledge, skills and competences. We seek non-technocratic and holistic solutions to societys current challenges and believe that new thinking is required to address their complex and multi-dimensional nature. Our past projects include Security Sector Reform, DDR, irregular migration, capacity building for maritime security agencies, irregular migration by sea, civil society in conflict prevention, capacity building for peacebuilders and early warning mechanisms.
