Core competencies

Dott. Ernesto Salzano is a permanent researcher of Istituto di Ricerche sulla Combustione of the Italian National Research Council (IRC-CNR) since 2001.
Main research activities are in the field of industrial safety: fires and explosion experiment and modelling (CFD), risk assessment, specifically on domino effects and on the analysis of external events (due to natural disaster or security issue) on industrial equipment.
He is currently the leader of an experimental lab for safety parameters of substances at high pressure in Napoli (IT) and teaches at University of Bologna for master courses on explosion regarding offshore platform, sponsored by Eni Corporate University and Saipem.
For IRC-CNR, he is the scientific coordinator of EU research projects as: INTERREG; INTEG-RISK on multidisciplinary approaches on emergency risk (LNG, Na-Tech, Security). He has been also the project leader of a large governmental project with the Italian Department of Civil Protection for the industrial emergency plan of his town.
Expert Member of European Commission, either for general research proposal or for SME-jointed industrial research for V, VI and VII EU research program, also on the security topics.
He is authors of about 130 papers on industrial safety and collaborates with all international journals on industrial risks (Journal of Hazardous Materials, Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries, Risk Analysis, Process Safety and Environmental Protection, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, and others).
In US he collaborates with Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants in US.

With specific reference to security he can be an added value for chemical risks (e.g. related to standard chemical industry, LNG terminals, flammable and toxic gas and liquid transporation) , explosive, sabotage.

Also he is participating to projects where the interaction of tools and tecniques for natural hazards prevention and mitigation on industrial plants are integrated with security aspects.
