National Security Research ProjectsVAUDEO is a system that makes synchronous usage of acoustic sensors and optical systems possible. With VAUDEO, target detection can be achieved by acoustic sensors through the processing of acoustic signals in the audible sound range (50 Hz – 20 KHz) and beyond (20 KHz-25 KHz) followed by the visual tracking over the images collected by day/thermal cameras. Consequently, the detection of targets which cannot be detected by only cameras, is achieved by acoustic sensors and furthermore the targets can be classified. Once the detection process is completed totally by acoustic signal processing, target tracking can take place over images.
VAUDEO is composed of two sub-systems :
a. Acoustic Target Detector,
b. Video image based Target Tracker,
For acoustical target detection, Microflown Sensors, which measure “Particle Velocity” are used. Through measurement of “Particle Velocity”, it is possible to estimate the exact location of any acoustic signal source by a single Microflown Acoustic Vector Sensor. Thus, coordinates of a target which is even not in the Field of View (FOV) can be exactly estimated. (e.g. helicopter behind of a mountain, a soldier firing behind an emplacement etc.)
Digital image processing algorithms which enable target detection, have been specifically developed for Audio-Video sensor fusion. These smart fusion enabling algorithms run on embedded platforms compatible with harsh Military Standard SWaP criteria. In brief, target position is initially estimated by Acoustic Sensing, followed by the orientation of Image Sensors aiming at the detected target to obtain high resolution images.

By VAUDEO System :
i. Coordinates of a target which is not in the FOV can be estimated. (e.g. a helicopter behind of a mountain)
ii. Coordinates of targets which are in the FOV but difficult to detect visually, can be estimated. (e.g. a soldier firing behind an emplacement, sharpshooters)
iii. Targets whose acoustic signatures have been saved can be classified due to system’s capability of analysis at the frequency domain. (e.g. distinguishing of G3 and AK47 weapons)
