Core competencies

Anglia Ruskin University in UK is capable of developing advanced monitoring tools over large forest
areas in order to fast detect and accurately locate fire. We have pre-existing relationships with
partners from previous projects that we can bring in to strengthen an emerging consortium; potential
partners are both industrial and academics, from countries including UK, Germany, Greece,
Netherlands and Jordan.

We propose to build a network of wireless sensors, distributed randomly throughout a forest that is
prone to or in threat of fire damage. These sensors will create a self-organized and robust network,
connecting all covered parts of the forest with a base station. This base station will be provided with
a GPS devise to fix its position, allowing all other sensors to determine their position relative to the
base station. When an incident occurs, the alarm signal to the fire department will include
information about the exact location of the fire, the flame length and the temperature, fire speed
and other parameters.
We can offer a complete “sub-consortium” to develop this aspect of the project, including project
management and bid-writing (both in collaboration with the project coordinator). Alternatively, we
can offer our expertise and that of our partners for incorporation into work packages within the
integrated project.

The Telecommunications Engineering Research Group (TERG) within Anglia Ruskin University
researches all aspects of telecommunication engineering and computer engineering as well as
electronic control systems design, with recent focus on wireless mobile systems where the quality of
service and security issues have been targeted.
TERG has a state-of-art wireless laboratory that includes highly sophisticated test equipment for the
whole range of spectrum, where highly advanced mobile communications tests can be performed for
all mobile development generations.
