Core competencies

The University of Bologna, created in 1088, is recognized as the oldest university in the western
world, and one of the largest in Italy (with more than 100,000 enrolled students). It is one of most
active Italian universities in research and technology transfer. At European level, the University was
partner in more than 150 EU projects in FP5 and FP6, and is currently involved in more than 180
projects in FP7. The Department of Electronics, Computer Science, and Systems (DEIS) is the ICT
department of the University of Bologna, formed in 1983. DEIS currently counts around 140 faculty
members and covers eight main research areas, among which Telecommunications. DEIS is strongly
committed to the development of high quality innovative interdisciplinary research in the fields of
electronics, communications, and navigation systems and to the technology transfer of relevant
results to worldwide industry. Within DEIS, the Digital Communications unit (Digicomm) is led by
Prof. Giovanni E. Corazza and counts 16 members.
The Digicomm Group of the University of Bologna Research has a long lasting experience in design
and assessment of Wireless and Satellite Communication techniques, architecture, and systems
developed and demonstrated in many research activities most of which founded by the European
Space Agency and the European Commission, among which the ESA/ESTEC project “2nd Generation
of DVB--‐RCS standardization Support (coordinator), the ESA/ESTEC project “Study of Satellite Role in
4G Mobile Networks (Coordinator), the EC FP7 Project SkyMedia (Coordinator).
