Core competencies

Our research largely falls under hardware security and telecommunications security, which includes
mobile & smartphone security, security of embedded systems & consumer electronics, and microkernel-
based secure & reliable systems. Representative projects include

1. SiMKo3 – In this project, we built a novel smartphone using a microkernel-based system architecture.
The resulting device is suitable for use in high-security environments (e.g., accessing confidential data
in government networks), while at the same time providing users with the latest mobile device
conveniences.
2. Femtocell Security – In this project we analyzed the security of femtocells and discovered potential
threats to mobile network operators and end-users.
3. Photon-DA – This BMBF funded project proved that photonic side-channel attacks pose a serious
threat to the semiconductor industry. We built a low-cost optoelectronic system to measure photonic
emissions stemming from cryptographic operations in an IC and developed statistical analysis methods
to perform photonic side-channel attacks.
4. Photon FX – The successor project to Photon-DA. The focus is on precisely characterizing fault attacks
based on sophisticated imaging technologies & our expertise in conducting photonic/optical analysis of
ICs.
5. NEMESYS – An EU FP7 funded project (www.nemesys-project.eu), which aims to R&D novel security
technologies (e.g., cyber attack analytics) for seamless service provisioning in the smart mobile
ecosystem.
