Core competencies
Our research team at Göttingen University’s Department of Law has extensive expertise in information law, media
law, data protection law and related areas. Besides numerous projects and publications, we organize regular
meetings with other scholars and practitioners active in this field, for example Göttingen IT Law Forum.
In recent years our team has been very active in analyzing the legal framework of the use of modern
surveillance tools for crime investigation and prevention. In particular, in the last three years we carried out the
legal evaluation part of the EU-funded international multidisciplinary projects SMART (http://smartsurveillance.eu)
and RESPECT (http://respectproject.eu). In these projects we were careful to consider not only the letter of the law
but also the practice of its application, benefiting from the co-operation with partners outside the academia, such as
the Interpol. At present we are planning to start a couple of new projects in this field, in particular an examination
of the use of social media networks for public security purposes.
