Core competencies

ABmerit, established in 1997 is leading European organization in the field of emergency preparedness and response
in case of radiological and nuclear accidents/incidents. The location of ABmerit site is in Slovakia (city of Trnava)
but its activities are exceeding the Slovak borders. ESTE systems, whose ABmerit is inventor and developer of, are
utilized and operated in several emergency crisis centers at national level in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria,
Bulgaria and the license was delivered also to Department of Nuclear Safety of the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA). In Slovakia, Czech Republic and in Bulgaria ESTE systems are running 24/7 on-site of nuclear power
plants.
ESTE system for accidents was benchmarked in the project of OECD-NEA “International benchmarking project on
fast-running software tools used to model fission product releases during accidents at nuclear power plants”.
ESTE system for impacts of routine discharges is compared and continually value-added as a result of participation
of ABmerit experts in the MODARIA I and II project (Modelling and Data for Radiological Impact Assessments) of the
IAEA.
ABmerit research team consist of 6 people and is built on experiences, established practices and professional
competences of its research group. The group consists of nuclear physicist, nuclear engineers, engineer of
geoinformatics and software engineer. This variety leads to exceptional and uncommon efficiency, power and
capability to achieve outstanding scores and results in the field of emergency preparedness and response world-
wide.

Relevant previous projects or activities:

ABmerit is author and developer of the software code ESTE.

FAST Nuclear Emergency Tools for the reliable prediction of severe accident progression and anticipation of the
source term of a nuclear accident, Horizon2020 call: H2020-EE-2014-2-RIA (NFRP-02-2014). Duration of the project:
2015-2019. ABmerit was a member of the consortium who implemented the project.

Name of the Project: Research, development and application of advanced methods of geoinformatics, remote
sensing and methods of parallel computation based on advanced hardware and software instruments, which enable
parallel processing. Application of advanced sophisticated methods in radioactivity modeling in the environment.
Project was co-financed from the Structural Funds of the EU, and the project was implemented by ABmerit and
Institute of Landscape Ecology of the Slovak Academy of Science. Duration: 2010-2014.

Project UDINEE: Urban Dispersion International Evaluation Exercise. Duration: 2015-2017. The main aim of UDINEE is
the evaluation of Atmospheric Dispersion Models that are or can be used in urban environment as Decision Support
Systems following Radiological Dispersion Device events. The project was coordinated by Joint Research Institute
JRC in Ispra (European Commission). ABmerit was one of the member institutes participating on the project.

Programmes MODARIA and MODARIA II (Modelling and Data for Radiological Impact Assessments),
organized by International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA. Duration: 2012-2015, 2016-2019.

ESA Project: ESA-Sen2Agri connection with ESTE. Duration: 2019-2021. This is a project of European Space Agency
(ESA).
