Core competencies

The Complex Systems & Security Lab (LASCOS) is one of the leading Italian research institutions in the field of critical infrastructures protection. Research activities of LASCOS are focused on the development of innovative and strongly multi-disciplinary methodologies, tools and technologies to support the study of large infrastructures in terms of their behaviors, threats, vulnerabilities and management.

UCBM has been involved in many EU and national projects related to model and analyze several large infrastructures, belonging to different application domains (such as energy transportation and distribution, telecommunications, rail-way systems, etc.). UCBM has been the coordinator of the EU DG JLS project SecuFood, is the coordinator of the DG HOME project FACES and participates to several projects related to Critical Infrastructure Protection.

On the basis of the large experiences acquired over more than ten years of research in the field of critical infrastructure protection and security, in 2009 the UCBM activated a Post Graduate Programme in Homeland Security (www.MasterHomelandSecurity.eu).
It represents the first experience in Italy and in Europe, with the aim to train experts of Critical Infrastructure Protection. The Programme is arranged in strong cooperation with Italian law enforcement agencies and with the support of the major Italian players in the field of security (Finmeccanica, Thales, Intergraph, etc.).
