Core competencies
The Unmanned Vehicle Centre of the Department of Mechanics of the Belgian Royal Military Academy
is a research laboratory specialized in the design, development and control of unmanned systems, both unmanned
ground vehicles (ugv) and unmanned aerial vehicles (uav). The lab conducts research in varied domains,
ranging from very fundamental aspects to the development of prototype products.
The (fundamental) research focus of our lab is more on robot intelligence: visual 3D perception,
unstructured terrain understanding, mapping, robot control, … The application scenarios are typically crisis
management and humanitarian demining applications. In this context, we are already coordinating 2 EU-FP7-IP
projects: ICARUS (http://www.fp7-icarus.eu/) on Search & Rescue and TIRAMISU (http://www.fp7-tiramisu.eu/) on
humanitarian demining and 1 H2020 BES-action SafeShore on maritime border surveillance.
Our special status as a research lab connected to the Belgian army allows us to have good relations and access to
many end users (Belgian First Aid and Support Team / Army / Civil Protection / Police / …)
