Research Group for Image Processing and Knowledge-Based Systems at the Department of Electronics, with the
University of Split, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Split deals
with basic and applied research in all aspects of signal processing of visual (i.e. image and video) signals. Research
focuses on video surveillance especially in search and rescue scenarios. Research topics also include development of
computer vision and image processing applications in various application areas.
Applied research areas:
1.) Image processing for surveillance (artificial and natural object detection and classification, fast processing of
large natural images for search and rescue applications, algorithms parallelization and GPU programming)
2.) Text extraction and OCR (image segmentation methods for text extraction, video magnifier to help visually
impaired people read printed documents)
3.) Human movement analysis (image feature detection, human tracking algorithms, fuzzy expert systems)
4.) Virtual reality systems (QAVE - immersive CAVE-like virtual reality system based on Quake engine, optical
tracking algorithms, body and body parts tracking using various sensors)
