Core competencies

The CSIR draws on a vast and experienced multidisciplinary skills base to contribute to keeping South Africa
safe and secure.

The CSIR’s interventions in support of these aims include developing novel solutions in identity authentication
through research in, amongst others, biometrics, and finding solutions for the monitoring and assessment of
security in cyberspace through research on network penetration testing, intrusion detection and forensics.

The organisation also develops systems for the effective sharing of information across different components of
the security forces and helps to ensure that government is a smart buyer and user of technology in this space.
The organisation provides science, engineering and technology support for the continuous improvement of the
country’s armed forces.

In the interest of national surveillance and situational awareness, the CSIR provides technology solutions to
improve the country’s ability to detect, track, classify and identify objects of interest. These capabilities are
used for anti-piracy, anti-poaching, peace support, border safeguarding and combating crime.
